During a recent visit to the Hockey Hall of Fame last September, I was mesmerized by the beautiful engravings on some of the hockey trophies. It was kind of hard to get a good pic of them since they were all behind glass and far away hah, but this one gives a good idea of what you'll find there. I made a gardenDespite my WORST efforts toward nurturing a garden this year, I have managed to harvest a few vegetable plants. I really do love gardening, but this year has been brutal. We have been away on vacation just about every other weekend, and I've been a little bit of a diva when it comes to working in 100+ degree heat. That being said, (and with the help of my husband and mother in law) I have grown a cucumber plant, 3 tomato plants, and a bunch of basil! woo!!! Oh, there are some hot pepper plants that survived too, but I dont have pictures. Everytime I tried to take a pic of that, a yellow jacket would buzz around my face! Jerk! I am also waging a war on the yellow jackets by my house, but that is a whole other story.

Every year, I snap pictures of the flowers and plants around the yard to see how much they have grown. Last year, the results were incredible. It's so exciting to see how far the plants and trees have come. Especially our weeping cherry tree, I already see some cherries on it. When Darin bought it, it was sick, but I'm so happy to see it looking so healthy now. They are a perfect match, and I feel lucky to call them family. <br /><br />My parents and sister watched Lily over the weekend and they said she was great. I worked from home today because of the snowstorm, however, I am so sick :( so it wasn't all that fun. Darin is sick too! Is that even normal for both parents to be sick while baby is just as happy as a clam? I'm just waiting for Lily to get sick, any day now, maybe? It's been 7 months and she hasn't gotten anything! (is it really necessary to knock on wood at this point?). <br /><br />I just hope, if she does get sick, its after I start feeling better. I'd hate to have to take care of her while sneezing all over her. :/ poor baybo! <br /><br />Anyway, after work, I was motivated to put a newsletter together for Moving Beauty. Just wanted to make a post and say hello to my online world. Do people still make new years resolutions? I haven't really made any resolutions, but I have been taking on new projects that have been keeping me busy. I realized how many awesome tools I have laying around in my basement. For Christmas, I got a screen printer (YES!) This is the most awesome gift ever!! I really really wanted my first print to be some red wings logos on stuff for Lily haha, but my printer is being weird, so I might just end up drawing something on the transparency to screen print it on EVERYTHING. muh haha I'm kind of leaning towards screening this little drawing of lincoln I made a while back. <br /><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5216/5386277238_533b723999_o.png"> <br /><br />I started a project for my sister in law, cutting some numbers out of MDF board with my scroll saw. I forgot how much I love building and making things!! I'm really happy with how the numbers turned out, this could be the beginning of a beautiful obsession of cutting things out of MDF. <br /><br />Another fun thing I'm working on is a postcard for AIGA Detroit. I made these two with some photochrome images from the LOC archives. (sorry to get so cheesy, but sometimes the blog is the only place to do it!) <br /><br />And if taking care of a baby wasn't time consuming enough, I picked now to start a side job. I am so glad that she didn't because I love going through old family photos. I found my flickr set and decided to look at them again. There are pictures of the cottage that I used to go to when I was little. I remember filling pie pans full of mud and setting them out by the back porch to cool. I also love the picture of my parents with their DIY paper cut out Christmas tree that they hung since they didn't have a real tree. Baby pictures of my dad! We bought him this so he would have a nice bone to chew on for <b>a while</b>. It would also give him a little entertainment now that Pongo went home. Yes, this bone was edible, but we thought it would be nice to get him the edible one, so when he chews bits off, he wouldn't be eating plastic, or whatever those other bones are made of. It still looked sturdy enough to last a while.<br /><br />Lincoln ate the WHOLE BONE in 10 min. I saw him bite it in half, and I thought, <i>I should take one half and save it so he has two.</i> But nooooo, the next time I looked, the bone disappeared! It was as if it melted away and Lincoln was licking any kind of bacon taste left on the couch. UGH! It ended up being a great night out!<br /><br />I traveled down to the lecture with Veronica & Shawn. We parked the car and mozied on down to the lecture. On our way there we stopped at <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/gourmet-hot-dogs-detroit-2">Gourmet Hotdogs</a>, a little hot dog stand that was amazing! I had a Detroit Chili Dog (Hot dog with coleslaw, chili, and cheese..did I mention it was amazing?). Everyone should go down there and try one, right now. <br /><br /><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4117/4932229440_4cc2ebb2e6_o.jpg" align="center"><br /><br />Back to the lecture...<br /><br />First of all, I really miss going to lectures and I was so happy I went to this one. He started the show by having his Dad come up on stage and tell a handful of jokes. His Dad was a great character, bright hawaiian shirt, BIG white beard, and so jolly you just wanted to give him a hug! It was very sweet seeing how happy Draplin was to be back in Michigan to see his family. <br /><br />The more he talked, the more he reminded me of a lot of me and my friends. He travels to estate sales and collects old junk for design inspiration, just like all of us! He said he goes to 'rescue' these old artifacts. So true! I couldn't wait to get home to look at my collection of things I've rescued. He even talked about how he takes pictures of things at estate sales, which made me laugh because <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/movingbeauty/sets/72157607188302490/">I do this too!</a> (which reminds me, we HAVE to take a family trip to Ludington, maybe next summer).<br /><br />Draplin is somewhere in the middle of his career and already has a ton of exciting stories and projects to share. He told some amazing stories or tall tales as he called them. Most of which he did not want anyone to videotape and share with the world. He kept it intimate, and made sure these stories were only shared with the 100 or so people in the room, it was our thing (and I'll keep it that way out of respect for him). I loved that he had a personal story about each project. Most lectures are just a portfolio review, but I really loved that his life stories and work stories went together hand in hand. I guess that's something I've always wanted or assumed I would have, and didn't realize how much I'd have to work at it to make that happen. Somewhere along the line, my passion for incorporating design into my personal life has dwindled, but its coming back now! If anything, Lily has inspired me to finish a ton of projects already, and now I am inspired to keep the momentum going. First of all, it was my moms birthday. I love my mom! I feel so lucky to have her in my life, she has taught me how to be a kind and loving person and I don't know what I'd do without her. I am so happy that Lily has a Grandma like her. Happy Birthday Mom! I love you always.<br /><br />Yesterday was also my first day back to work. It went well, I think. I was very busy at work, so that helped keep my mind off home. It was really nice to see my co-workers and joke around with them all day. I missed that. I was lucky enough to come home for lunch to nurse Lily, a wonderful bonus to working close to home. The best part about being back at work, was coming home at the end of the day. Darin and I both came home at the same time, and Lily was soooo excited and happy to see us. The three of us sat on the couch and poked at Lily to get every last smile and giggle out of her. She looked so happy to be with her mom and dad again. <br /><br />Lily was lucky enough to spend the day with her Grammie while I was at work. Her birthday is today, Happy Birthday, Grammie! (I still can't believe how close my parents birthdays are to Darin's parents birthdays.) I couldn't have asked for a better mother-in-law. She is so wonderful with Lily and I'm so amazed at her generosity and kindness. I am lucky to have a second mom like her.
